My Skills and Experience

I have 20 years experience. I work integratively, incorporating a range of different approaches and I use and adapt these approaches according to the issues my clients bring. Over the 20 years, I have worked with people who have brought a wide range of different problems.

The following are examples of such issues: Relationship difficulties, anxiety, stress management & relaxation, depression, addictions, bereavement, eating disorders, abuse, anger management, bullying, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, post traumatic stress disorder, trauma, work related issues, multicultural issues, spirituality, infertility, work/life balance, social skills & assertiveness, low self-confidence/self-esteem, sexuality, parenting and problems from childhood, young peoples' issues, life coaching and personal growth and development.

Although I do not specialize in any one area, I do have a particular interest and expertise in relationship counselling.


Background Clinical Experience:

NHS - referrals from GP's
Education - 15 years as a Counsellor in Schools & Colleges of Higher Education
Youth Service - 10 years helping troubled teenagers and their families with very complex problems/family therapy
Referrals from large corporations, via Employee Assistance Programmes, for short term, solution focussed work
Attend critical incidents supporting those suffering from post traumatic stress.

In the initial session we will explore the issues and set goals. If, after the initial session, we decide we are comfortable working together, we will then work toward achieving those goals. I believe that you do not need to attend for longer than is necessary for you to achieve your goals. I work in an active, participatory style, using the Cognitive Behavioural approach when appropriate, and I guide clients in exploring their options/choices in life.

Towards the end of the process, I do some Life Coaching, for example, encouraging clients to look at their strengths, achievements and future goals. All my clients leave counselling feeling they have gained a greater sense of self-understanding/awareness and self-esteem. They are more effective communicators and more emotionally literate, generally. Their relationships become stronger as a result. Having clarified a way forward, they feel they can now take back control of their lives and move forward more confidently.

I keep my skills up to date with regular training and continued professional development. I hold a clear current Enhanced CRB check.
